The deed is done.

so I’m back from my trip to Rexburg. I don’t know how many of you knew that I went in the first place, but I decided to spend Labor Day weekend with my broja (that’s Todd) and his sweetheart (that’s Kristen) in Rexburg so that he could take my senior pictures, plus I just wanted to hang out with the champs. Seeing as how I haven’t even seen them since April 11th.These are just a few of my very favorites, but i'll give you a link to some more of my very few favorites. (Those are just the ones I currently have on my Facebook at the moment.) When Todd sends me the rest of the pictures, I may or may not post them on here. I’m for sure going to get some printed, so some/most of you will get hard copies of these. They are, after all, my senior portraits. :)

Fun with Todd and Kristen (with LOTS of videos)

When we visited Idaho Falls a couple of weeks ago Todd came over to hang out with us for a while. The kids had him jumping through hoops- literally.

The next day we went up to Rexburg to spend some time with Todd & Kristen at their apartment. They broke out the only toys they had- some poppers/snappers and a package of balloon rockets. Lemme tell ya, they were a hit.

And here's Kristen trying to get an aneurysm & me looking retarded. See, I don't mind posting stupid pictures of myself. But this only further demonstrates why I try to stay BEHIND the camera as much as possible. Sarah = NOT photogenic.
See, you use these itty bitty straws to blow up these long skinny balloons (that I think are made of the same thing as Michelins) , then when/if you get them filled you toss them into the air and watch the kids chase them as they fly all over the place making the most annoying sound. They were very entertaining.




You had to know I'd post this one, Todd. Just to make Mom shake her head in shame. :)


One last video. Pyper taught her self how to hula-hoop while we were there. She got it down in one day, but the next day when she tried to do it she said, "Ow! My stomach hurts!" Sore muscles from too much hula-hooping! How hilarious is that?!

Of Birthdays, Back To School & Blogging...

I remember when I was younger, that my mother would say to me, “Don’t try to grow up so fast!” That must have been back when I knew ‘everything’ and was so ready to get on with life… Now I realize that I don’t know ‘everything’ (but I have raised some smart kids who do), and despite my efforts NOT to grow up—I did! This has been an eventful year for me—thankfully, all good stuff for my kids: sending a daughter on a mission, a new grandson, two sons marrying their sweethearts (which means two more daughters), my first born turning 30 and my baby starting her senior year of high school!

I did some calculations the other day and realized that this will be the 25th year that Dad and I have had at least one child in public school! Bryce was 4 years old his first day of kindergarten, turning 5 like the next day, I think. He looked so small to me, but he was smart enough to keep up with the best of them.

This past Thursday, Jennifer had her last ‘first day of school’ picture taken; Sarah likely was taking Pyper’s FIRST ‘first day of school’ picture at the same time and she is starting a new phase in her life as a mother.

I admit that I am getting a misty eyed, reflecting on all the blessings I have—not the least of which is my six children, and now their spouses and grandchildren! Forgive me if I wax nostalgic these days, but FAMILY is what it is all about, and I don’t regret a single minute of the sacrifice and hard work it took to be a mother, because I have the best family ever—perhaps in spite of, and not because of me!! How did I get so lucky?!?

Mom, I’m not trying to grow up too fast any more, but it would seem that all of a sudden my kids are! So I will enjoy their milestones, rejoice in their accomplishments, be happy for the years of joy that they have given me—and look forward to the fun ride that lies ahead!!

So, in honor of Bryce’s birthday 'milestone', here are a few parting photos…enjoy the memories! Oh, and HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!

Google Voice

First of all, Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad. If you guys agree to celebrating your 30th for a few more years then I'll agree to stay 29 for a while. Sound good?

I just thought I'd take some time to share a little with you guys about a new toy I've been playing with that you may or may not have heard about. Google Voice is currently in an "invite" stage, but all you have to do is give them your e-mail address an wait a few days to get your invite. Once you have that, you select a gVoice number to get started. You then associate all your other phone numbers (home, cell, work, etc.) with the account. From here there are almost limitless options to customize how it works for you. Whenever someone calls your gVoice number you can decide how the call is routed. You can have all or none or any other combination of your phones ring depending on who is calling, the time of day, or even day of the week. One of the coolest things you can do is that it lets you make free long distance calls anywhere in the US if you can access your account from a computer. All you do is tell it who you want to call and on what phone. gVoice calls you on the phone that you select, then as soon as you answer, the call is connected to the other line. They also say they have very good rates on international calls, although I don't make any international calls so I don't really know what a good rate is. You can also send text messages for free from your interface.

I'm still just starting to play around with it, but I think as it starts to catch on it will become a pretty commonplace. There are a ton of other uses that I'm not going to go into since there are lots of people out there that can explain it better than me. Let me know if any of you decide to try it out (or if you are already using it).

Dad's California Trip

Shortly after we got back from New Mexico, Frank surprised me and asked if I wanted another week off. Of course I said yes (duh!) and took the opportunity to go to California to visit Grandma. I ended up swinging through Palmdale and picked up Cheryl, Taylor and Bryson (who is taller than me now). We had a fun week. Grandma made me an applesauce cake and I managed to gain about 5 pounds on the trip. The 4 of us (Grandma stayed home) went to Chinatown in San Francisco on Thursday. I thought of Jennifer and Kimberly when we were there. It's one of their favorite places. On Friday, Janae and her kids (who are all getting HUGE!) came over and we all loaded up and went to Bean Hollow. It’s over on the coast, just south of Half Moon Bay – about an hour and a quarter from San Lorenzo. Anyway, we had a great trip. Nice day, good weather, fun beach – what more could you ask? ."Baby" Sarah checking out a crab.

Before I found out I was coming to California, there had been a party scheduled at Grandma’s house on Sunday (more on that later). Ryan and Jan couldn’t make the Sunday thing because of church commitments so they decided to come spend Saturday with us. But on Friday night, when we got home from Bean Hollow, Grandma went into the utility room for something and several loud “oh no!"'s echoed through the house. Her water heater had sprung a leak (just a drip, but there was water all over the floor). I took a look at I and thought I could change it out. So guess what Ryan and I got to do on Saturday? It wasn’t too tough a job, and went pretty smoothly, except for the shut off valve that also needed replacement. Turns out Ryan had helped Granpa install the old one 16 years ago. But after that we got to play cards and have fun.
The Sunday event was planned before I know I was coming, but worked out beautifully. My cousin Grant and most of his family were in Palo Alto (across the bay) on vacation, and they had decided to meet up at Mom’s for a mini reunion. Wally (another roommate) and his son came up from Monterey and Bart came as well, so we had 4 of our college roommates together again. Much fun was had by all. . 4 Old Guys .
I like driving up the north coast when I’m there, so on Monday, Cheryl, Grandma, Bryson and myself (Taylor stayed at Janae’s house to play with her kids) drove up into Sonoma County and along the coast. We went up to Fort Ross and Salt Point State Parks and then came on home – about 270 miles. Sonoma and Mendocino counties in California are among the most beautiful places on earth (that aren't sand dunes). Driving east from the coast through the redwoods is pretty cool, too. I really do like going up there and seeing the coastline. .Fort Ross coastline.
Not a good trip if you're prone to carsickness, though.

And on Tuesday we made the long drive home. But it was a fun trip and good to see Grandma again. It’s funny how things tend to break down at her house when I go for a visit. Last time (or the time before) the plumbing under her kitchen sink broke and Ryan and I were able to fix it. This time it was the water heater. Timing is everything. But it was nice to be able to be there and able to help when something goes wrong.

Anyway, that was my trip. I'll have to do it again sometime soon, I guess. I recommend it to all. Dad

Vacation After the Vacation

I had such a great time in New Mexico. I sometimes wonder how much other people spend on holidays in order to get away the way we do. We are all so fortunate to have Mommer and Popper and their ridiculous industriousness.

After the trip, I took a day and a night to visit some parts of Utah I had never been to, or at least some parts I don't remember. I drove from Coral Pink up through the San Raphael Swell to get over to Goblin Valley. I had a vague sense of what it would be like, but it has been so long since my first trip there, I had no idea what to expect. Most of these pictures are for you Dad, so you can see how much it has changed.

After camp, I took a quick side hike over to Little Wild Horse Canyon in the swell. It was late and I was going it alone, so I wasn't able to see as much as I wanted, but the slot canyons in there are out of control. There are a few spots where you literally have to suck in your tummy to squeeze through.

Make sure the volume is on.

Anyhow, it was just me so there wasn't a whole lot of craziness to take pictures of, but it was really wonderful to see some of those places. Goblin Valley turned out to be worth the drive. On the way back I drove through Capital Reef, which is a really under rated park. Its not too far out of the way if you are headed in the southern direction it is definitely worth the stop. Next time I post, I promise it will be something more interesting.

Mi Casa es Su Casa

It has been a busy July for us so far! We enjoyed having Sarah, Aaron, Pyper, Hakan and Finnley visit us for the 4th of July weekend. We made two trips into Kanab that day--once in the morning to watch the parade down the center of town (while Dean and Aaron golfed) and again in the evening to watch the 10 minute fireworks display (maybe a waste of a 30 minute one-way trip...) Pyper and Hakan thought it was awesome that the people in the parade threw candy to the spectators (we had to keep an eye on them that they didn't get run over when the parade made a u-turn at the end of Center Street and came back again). Hakan was thrilled to see Spiderman in the hometown parade and later, when the fire engines came by, Pyper was waving for them spray her with water while Hakan cowered behind me (Sarah had the presence of mind to duck into the nearby cafe with Finn when she saw what was coming). I made a pitiful campfire in the evening to let the kids roast hotdogs for dinner (which we ate inside since it was too hot to stay outside) and then we went back out to roast marshmallows for 'smores. It wasn't a fancy feast, I'm ashamed to say, but my intent was for the kids to get a kick out of it.

Pyper and Hakan got to experience some new things while at Casa de Campo. On Friday, while nearly everyone else was in Las Vegas helping move household items for a couple in the branch, Mom, Jennifer, Pyper & Hakan got to go to the 'farm' with Mommer to feed and water her horses, water the garden and also pick fresh spinach for dinner!

Dad and the other men helped Popper with the new terrace project that looks like will take more work than originally anticipated, but on our last evening there, Keith talked Popper into building a campfire for old times sake. So, using the firepan that the Cox's had given them, Popper inagurated the upper level of the new outdoor living area with a Montoya campfire! This will be a new favorite spot to congregate once the project is complete--and it will be awesome no doubt!

This years visit to Mommer & Popper's was brief but it was fun to get to see Terry & Ferrell, Tricia, Chris, Jordan (and Pico), Ashton & Wesley.
Mommer enjoyed having Finn all to herself for a while as well. Sarah's post about their trip will likely be more fascinating reading, but I had some pictures that I knew she didn't have and wanted to share them.
We missed having Aaron, Rachelle, Bryce, Dena, Todd & Kristen with us in New Mexico, but we are looking forward to the wedding in October and another chance for us all to get together again.

Our vacation

I hope everybody had a good time in New Mexico. I just couldn't come up with a plan for us to go out there that allowed us to use our time off efficiently and still get to see you guys as much as I wanted to. I just would have been all travel and not much fun.

Instead we decided to stay a little closer to home. We rented a cabin for a few days in north Georgia near a town called Ellijay. We've stayed there before (although in different cabins) and it's always a lot of fun. There is lots to do in the area and the place we rented is pet friendly so Zoey got to come with us. There was a small lake just a short walk from the cabin that Zoey got to go swimming in, although it was a little scummier than anything Dena and I felt like getting into. I thought that Zoey could swim pretty well from here trips to a creek by our house, but I think she was just walking on her hind legs under water. When I put her into the lake, she sunk like a rock and was barely able to tread water. I think her buoyancy is just too far forward because of her deep chest, so her back end just sinks and she can't go anywhere.




Thankfully, we thought that might be the case and brought a lifejacket with us just in case. She's a much better swimmer with that on and actually really enjoys swimming out to get her ball.




The next day we dropped Zoey off at a cool doggie daycare in Blue Ridge Georgia so she could play all day while we went up to the Nantahala River near Bryson City, NC to do some rafting. We have done this once before a few years back and had a lot of fun. We rented a two person inflatable kayak (called a "duckie") and took a self-guided trip down the river. It is a spring fed river so even in the middle of July the water is a chilly 52 degrees. We made it most of the way down the river without much drama until the very end when we got to the roughest part. We got a little sideways going into a nasty little hydraulic. We were both leaning back to try and prevent tipping over forward, but perhaps we should have been leaning forward instead because the boat just slid right out from under us and we ended up swimming. Dena thinks it was payback for chucking the dog in the lake.

They had to throw a rope to get me out and a dude in a raft had to paddle out to rescue Dena. It's a good thing they got us too, because just a few yards past the takeout is the "Lower Nantahala Falls", a class v rapid that could have really caused us some damage. As it was we still got pretty beat up on the rocks before we made it to shore.

On Wednesday we decided to go for a hike to enjoy the beautiful area a bit more. We had visited a local shop to get advice on a good day hike and they recommended the Conasauga River Trail in the Cohutta Wilderness. It was absolutely gorgeous and we will definitely have to do it again some time. There were lots of spots with cool little falls and river crossings. There were several times when I thought one of us would slip on a rock and end up swimming again, but we made it without any drama. Zoey is a good little mountain dog and even got to carry her new pack with all her own food and water in it.

We had to leave on Thursday at lunch time, so we got back to our house in the early afternoon. Dena and Zoey promptly passed out while I unloaded the car and went to play a game of Ultimate in the evening. We've spent the day today recovering from our wounds. Dena and I went to see "Up" and we're going to the dog park in a bit to let Z get some exercise.

We had a lot of fun, but of course wish we could have seen everybody also. I guess we'll have to wait until October and we'll see you all then.

Gone Fish'n

Last Saturday, Rachelle and I were invited to go sailing on her boss's boat at a place called Strawberry Reservoir. I hadn't really thought about it before then, but I've never been sailing before so I was really excited about the trip. It turned out to be such a blast. We got to fish while we were out and had some luck. I caught two good sized trout but had to release them because they were too big ( this is the truth, although I admit I phrased it just so to make the fish sound impressive - they were only about 18 in.) Anyway, I highly recommend this particular brand of recreation to anyone if they have the opportunity because it was such a nice time - an easy and natural kind of relaxation. Not to mention, the whole thing feels like the last 5 happy minutes of a movie you once watched. Good times.

I can't wait to see everyone in NM soon. It is pretty much all I want to talk about.
